APPALACHIAN FIELD TRIP SUGGESTIONS

 

Blue Heron Community is an oral history-based exhibit of an old coal camp that closed in the 1960s. It is located in the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area run by the National park Service located in Tennessee and Kentucky. The Big South Fork Scenic Railway is one way to get there. Another is by car. A third is by foot. The only original structure that remains is the large coal tipple that dumped the coal into rail cars. The other structures are "ghost"structures where a visitor can access editaped interview of former residents of the community.

The Museum of Appalachia is located in Norris, Tennessee north of Knoxville. it is a representation of a pioneer community typical of East Tennessee. The founder, John Rice Irwin, had many of the structures moved to the site from other locations. He has collected thousands of items over the years and he displays them in several buildings. Most of the items are typical of the pre-industrial era.

Matewan is an exellent field trip to explore the history of an Appalachian mining community, the industrialization of the Appalachian region, the hatfield-McCoy feud, and environmental issues such as flooding and pollution. it is located on the Kentucky/West Virginia border along the Tug River.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the Cades cove area mainains the remains of a community that existed until the federal government assumed control of the land by the right of eminent domain. Farms, homes, churches, cemeteries, and a mill still exist. Read more about the history of the park here.
The Cherokee Indian Reservation in Cherokee, North Carolina features Oconaluftee Indian Village, a village created to represent Cherokee life 250 years ago. Also, "Untio These Hills" is an outdoor drama about the Cherokee's contact with Caucasians. The Museum of the Cherokee nation is also useful.

Narrow Ridge Earth Literacy Center's purpose is to educate students and the community regarding earth-friendly lifestles. People living on adjoining land trusts have committed themselves to living such earth-friendly lifestyles. it is located near Washburn, enness, north of Knoxville.
Cherokee National Forest is in eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina. It is an excellent place for a field trip examining the natural history of the appalachians or the history and issues related to the U.S. Forest Service.

Champion International's chip mill, Royal Blue, in Campbell County, Tenness at the I-75 Oneida exit, is representative of some of the new chip mills being built in the southeast. John Flynn, administrator, has given presentations about the operation as well as tours. These presentations/tours provide an opportunity to listen to the company's view of this type of industry as well as how the technology operates.
The Southern Appalachia Railway Museum is a nonprofit committed to preserving the history of the railroad in Appalachia. The organization sponsors an excursion train ride that provides a tour and history of Oak Ridge, the "Secret City." The schedule is limited to particular weekends during spring, summer, and fall.

The Pocahontas Exhibition Coal Mine is available as a tour from April through October. The tour provides a history of coal mining in the early part of the 20th Century and a view of the hand-loading technology used during that time. It is located in Pocahontas, Virginia in Tazewll County.
Appalshop is a nonprofit organization that focuses on preserving Appalachian culture and history on film. Their films have been available to schools andoters for educational purposes. The organization is located in Whitesburg, Kentucky.

The Crab Orchard Museum is a collection of log and stone buildings and artifacts of the pioneer era in southwestern Virginia.  The artifacts include some recently discovered Native American finds.  The museum is located in Tazewell, Virginia.

The Birthplace of Country Music Alliance has developed a museum located at Bristol Mall in Bristol, Virginia.  The museum is dedicated to the early years of country music. The Carroll Reese Museum at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee houses both historical and art exhibits. The Center for Appalachian Studies is also located at ETSU and is an excellent resource for faculty teaching courses about Appalachia.

The Carter Family Memorial Music Center is located in Hiltons, Virginia. It is dedicated to preserving old time music and offers pefomances on a regualr basis. The performers use only nonld-timemusical instruments.
Blue Ridge Institute is located on the Ferrum College campus in Ferrum, Virginia. It includes a farm museum, archives, and festival activities.
