Marie Tedesco, East Tennessee State University, developed this  bibliography of scholarship on Appalachia with the intention of serving as a guide to works written since 1960.  Iin the section Classics in Appalachian Scholarship,  most of the works cited predate 1960.  "Beyond the Mountains":  The Paradox of Women's Place in Appalachian History

Women's Work in Alleghany County , NC

"The best society in the mountains - that is today, the most interesting - is that of young married men and that of the older women." (Emma Bell Miles 1905)
Heiddi M. Efird found while doing this  research  that the work of women in Appalachia is a topic that is often overlooked or just simply accepted unquestioned.
Appalachian families themselves do not seem to acknowledge the labor of women.
