This Bibliography is compiled from a wide range of personal and public
(re)sources, to include works directly focusing on Appalachia as well
as works that help, through comparision or theory, to illuminate our

The Council on Appalachian Women Collection is housed at this site
in the Archives of Appalachia. This site has many links to
other collections and works.

Marie Tedesco, East Tennessee State University, developed this
bibliography of scholarship on Appalachia with the intention of
serving as a guide to works written since 1960. Iin the section
Classics in Appalachian Scholarship, most of the works cited
predate 1960. The bibliography focuses on books.

Heiddi M. Efird found while doing this research that
the work of women in Appalachia is a topic that is often overlooked
or just simply accepted unquestioned.
Appalachian families themselves do not seem to acknowledge the labor
of women.

Rural
Women's Recovery Program and Women's Outreach . . .Serving Rural Appalachian
Women and Families in Ohio
|
Rural Women's Recovery Program (RWRP) and Women's Outreach Program
are two
substance abuse programs designed to address the specific treatment,
prevention, education,
and intervention needs of women and families in rural Appalachia.
The programs have experienced considerable success: RWRP has admitted
over 136 residential clients since January 1990, and Women's Outreach
has provided prevention, education, and intervention services for
9,198 rural residents
since July 1991.

Appalachian Women

The Archives of Appalachia holds many collections which highlight
women who were writers, prominent leaders in the community, underground
miners, aviators, educators,
and health care workers. This collection also includes women's perspectives
in times
of war and issues of interest to women such as child care and domestic
violence.
