Sites Especially for Students

BBC English  An outstanding instructional site produced by the BBC.

CNN Worldview for ESL  Brigham Young University-Hawaii Language Center's "CNN Newsroom and Worldview for ESL" provides ESL exercises based upon CNN news broadcasts.

Dave's ESL Café  Dave Sperling, an ESL teacher at California State University, Northridge, has produced a variety of paper and Webbed regarding using the Internet to teach English as a second language.

Impact On-Line  Impact! Online was an interactive news magazine for intermediate and advanced ESL/EFL students produced until 1995.

Planet English  Planet English provides a commercial product to be used by ESL teachers and students; it teaches English as an international language using varieties of English from around the world.

Sites Especially for Teachers

AAAL  This is the homage of the Association for Applied Linguistics; it includes announcements of conferences, but it has no ESL teaching materials.

CALICO Computer Assisted Language Instruction  The Computer Assisted Language Instruction Consortium, based at Southwest Texas State University, provides materials for language instruction professions.

Center for Applied Linguistics  The Center for Applied Linguistics uses this site to provide an introduction to the organization's work and to provide links to a variety of sites concerned with language policy and language instruction.

CALL  Developed by the College Writing Programs of the University of California, Berkeley, this home page has a valuable section devoted to ESL-EFL links.

Conferences for Language Teachers  Included in Roy's Resources, this site lists conference schedules for linguists, translators, interpreters and teachers of languages.

Conferences from TESOL  

English Teacher Journal  Each issue usually has at least one article dealing with ESL instruction.

ESL Journal On-Line  This e-journal is for teachers of English as a second language and provides articles, research papers, lessons plans, classroom handouts, teaching ideas, and links.

IATFL  The home page of The International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language provides information for ESL professionals.

Language Learning Techonolgy Journal  This issue of Language Learning Technology Journal, volume 4, Number 1 ( May, 2000),  is devoted to the role of computer technology in second language acquisition  research.

Language Learning Technology (LLTI)  LLTI stands for Language Learning Technology International, a listserver created and moderated by Otmar Foelsche of Dartmouth College. LLTI has become the principal means of information exchange among those interested in language learning technology.

Language Policy  This site is Jim Crawford's effort to promote discussion of language policy and to promote his book, Bilingual Education: History, Politics, Theory, and Practice  (4th ed., 1999).

Linguist List  A site for teachers which provides a variety of materials including lists of conferences and journals.

NETEACH-L  NETEACH-L, is an on-line forum through which international EFL/ESL teachers can discuss issues related to using technology as an educational tool. This list was created for the purpose of
not only sharing success stories and activity ideas, but also helping computer-phobic teachers overcome their fears in order to use the technology to their students' (and their own) full advantage.

Resources to Learn English
This French site offers many links relevant to teaching and learning English.

TESL-EJ  TESL-EJ is fully refereed e-journal devoted to articles about teaching English as a second language or a foreign language; each article undergoes a review by at least two knowledgeable scholars.

We Speak English  WES is a company that sells ESL instructional materials.

WebCT  WebCT is a commercial concern which is concerned with computer assisted instruction in a variety of realms, including language instruction.
