Forum on "The
Research Paper in the 21st Century" at 2002 Tech
Summit
Among the pre-conference meetings at
this year's Summit on "Collaboration in Teaching
and Learning" will be one focusing on the
opportunities and challenges of teaching and writing
research papers in the 21st century. This forum
on Thursday, October
24, from 1-3 pm will be of particular interest not only to English
faculty but to all faculty in the arts and humanities
who ask students to do analytical writing based at least
in part upon their research of online and traditional
sources.
The challenges of using the research
assignment as a legitimate learning tool have grown with
the proliferation of potential resources on the
WWW. Yet these online resources also provide real
opportunities for teaching/learning. In the
roundtable discussion of this forum, faculty will share
their experiences with teaching research writing. Topics of presentations by panelists will
include
-
evaluation of electronic and
traditional sources
-
methods for avoiding and responding
to plagiarism
-
strategies for teaching responsible
and effective use of quotation and paraphrase
-
distinguishing between the research
report and the analytical essay
To suggest additional topics (or
to volunteer to serve as a panelist), please email Dr.
Tom Fish.
