Study Abroad Programs offered by Alderson-Broaddus:
The Austria Program
Alderson-Broaddus College
Salzburg Campus
Riedenbergerstrasse 2
A5020 Salzburg, Austria
Our Austria program at Alderson-Broaddus dates to 1965 and was established
to provide a global experiential perspective to our students’ education.
Alderson-Broaddus is located in a somewhat rural area and we feel that
an international educational experience is especially important for our
students as they prepare for careers in the 21st century. MAY
BE OPEN TO STUDENTS FROM OTHER ACA-MEMBER INSTITUTIONS...SEE BELOW
By the late 1990s we faced the problem of being able to support the program
every year on our own. Under President Steve Markwood’s leadership
the program was extended to include four sister Baptist colleges/universities.
These schools include Eastern University (St. Davids, PA), Franklin College
(Franklin, IN), Judson College (Elgin, IN), and Keuka College (Keuka Park,
NY). This consortium is sending 20-25 students and 2 faculty to study
in Europe each fall semester. All of the participating schools share a
common Christian educational philosophy.
The program follows the same social and academic policies that are established
on the home campuses. This includes no drinking. Alderson-Broaddus
would be pleased to welcome ACA member students in our program if they
come from colleges with similar drinking and drug policies as the ones
in effect at Alderson-Broaddus. Interested students should enroll
at Alderson-Broaddus for the particular fall semester in which they would
be participating in the Austria Program.
We offer six courses in Europe. Each course is a 4 credit hour course.
Each student takes three courses while in Europe (one course from each
group). The courses include:
GROUP A:
INST 160.01 European Cultures (4)
INST 160.02 European Cultures (4)
GROUP B:
INST 390.01: Special Topics in European Issues (4)
INST 390.02: Special Topics in European Issues (4)
GROUP C:
GERM 100.01: Elementary German Conversation I (4)
GERM 100.02: Elementary German Conversation II (4)
Each faculty person teaches one course in Group A and one course in Group
B. Each student must take a course from each professor.
Alderson-Broaddus provides one faculty person (the Group Leader) each
year. The second faculty person (the Assistant Group Leader) is provided
by the other consortium institutions on a rotating basis.
Both German courses are taught by qualified Austrian university language
teachers. Students take the German course that meet their German language
proficiency level.
Each student may take additional credits through:
1. Independent study with professors on their home campus.
2. Private music lessons arranged with the faculty of the Salzburg Mozarteum.
Each student will take a minimum of 12 semester hours and may take a
maximum of 18 semester hours.
The experiential education also includes:
1. One week in London with a 4-day Britrail pass for travel throughout
the British Isles.
2. A lecture at Oxford University.
3. Academic research in England and various European countries.
4. Two month Eurail pass and weekend travel (Thursday noon-Sunday midnight)
across Europe.
5. A week of study and travel in Italy, including Venice, Rome, and Florence.
Students advance register for the program on their home campuses in the
Spring before the fall semester. They pay a $500 deposit by May 1 of each
year. They attend a three-day orientation at Alderson-Broaddus the second
week of September and fly to London from Pittsburgh, PA. They return at
the end of the first week in December. The only cost beyond the first
semester tuition, room and board of the home college is a $2300 program
fee (of which the $500 deposit is a part). The program fee covers their
roundtrip airfare, all required ground transportation, Britrail and Eurail
passes.
Students must be enrolled in one of the participating colleges and meet
the minimum academic and social requirements that the participating institutions
require of their students who enroll in the program.
Alderson-Broaddus also participates in other institutions’
International Studies programs, including:
1. Hong Kong Baptist University in Hong Kong, China
2. Concordia International University in Estonia (Tallinn)
