Berea College

Study Abroad Programs Offered by Berea College:

Faculty members at Berea College propose various international courses as part of their January Short Term, and different faculty and courses are approved each year. In Short Term 2004, courses will be offered in Mexico, Ghana, and Italy.

Travel expenses for faculty members who are teaching the international courses are covered by an endowed fund. Students are charged the amount required to cover the cost of the program. Students receive small travel grants from an endowed fund to help them fund their participation. Most also apply for and receive loans from a Berea College loan fund.

International Programs Offered by a Consortium of which Berea College is a Member:

Berea is a very active member of the KIIS (Kentucky Institute for International Studies). KIIS offers summer programs in fifteen countries (Brazil; Austria [Bregenz and Salzburg]; Cameroon; China; Costa Rica; Denmark; Ecuador; France; Germany; Greece & Italy; Italy; Japan; Mexico; Puerto Rico; Spain) as well as semester programs in Spain, Mexico, Germany and France. (See KIIS website: <http://www.kiis.org/>).

Berea College faculty apply to teach in the KIIS programs. As with Short Term travel opportunities, participating students received small travel grants and then apply for Stafford Loans to help finance the balance.

International Programs Sponsored by Other Institutions in which Berea Students Participate:

Berea College provides scholarships for up to thirty students in all majors a year to spend a semester abroad. Additional scholarships are available for foreign language majors. Students can select programs from the numerous opportunities worldwide. The International Center maintains a resource center of information on available programs and the Study Abroad Advisor assists students in the identification of appropriate programs.

To participate, students must have a minimum GPA of 2.8 and must apply to a faculty committee. Selection for scholarship support is based on the appropriateness of the program they have selected for their own academic development.

Berea students study abroad through programs offered by providers such as the School for International Training (SIT) http://www.sit.edu/ , Augsburg College http://www.augsburg.edu/oip/, Kentucky Institute for International Studies http://www.KIIS.org and Central College http://www.central.edu/abroad. In addition, students are enrolled directly in universities in Australia, the United Kingdom, Ireland and New Zealand.

Exchange Programs in which Berea College students participate:

Berea has exchange agreements with universities in Thailand, Malaysia, Korea, and Japan.

In 2002-2003, 202 Berea College students studied abroad.
