science course): Field Study in Geology with the topic Geology
and Archaeology of the Mediterranean Basin. The course will
be offered online. In May, all students registered for the course
will take a two week field trip to Greece, including Crete and

GEOL 271-01--FIELD STUDY IN GEOLOGY:
THE
GEOLOGY AND ARCHAEOLOGY OF GREECE

DATES: May 15- June 1, 2005

COURSE PARTICULARS: This 2-credit Pass/Fail
course consists of a field trip to Greece to examine the
interface between Geology and Archaeology.

PROGRAM: After assembling in Athens, the group will
spend several days touring the archaeological sites in the
city and surrounding mainland areas. Attention will be
paid to the building stones and their sources. The class
will then head south, via ferry, to the island of Crete
where we will visit Minoan archaeological sites and
critical geological sites for the next 5 days, paying
particular attention to sites that were destroyed by
earthquakes in antiquity. Next, the group will ferry to
Santorini and visit the famous Thera volcano that
erupted catastrophically around 1550 BC and probably
changed the course of Western Civilization. It also
probably gave rise to the Atlantis myth. Finally, we
will ferry to Mykonos and visit the Sanctuary of Apollo
on Delos before returning to Athens. From there,
students will have the option of returning home or
continuing an exploration of Europe on their own.
The group will camp in campgrounds while visiting
the islands.
