Institute for Study Abroad at Butler University
Scholarship Program
For Students in the Appalachian College Association

Information

The Institute for Study Abroad at Butler University offers five scholarships of $1,500 each for students enrolled full-time in an Appalachian College Association-member college or university, to participate in an IFSA-Butler study abroad program. IFSA-Butler offers semester and/or academic year programs in Argentina, Australia, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, England, Ireland, Mexico, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, and Scotland. IFSA-Butler’s programs (with the exception of one London program) are integrated: that is, program participants from the U.S. study alongside students from the host country in established universities on-site. U.S. participants live in the same housing that students from the host country live in (residence halls, student apartments, host families, etc.). IFSA-Butler staff is available in each location to answer questions and provide assistance to program participants. Please consult the IFSA-Butler website for more information regarding programs, sites, and costs: http://www.ifsa-butler.org .

In order to be eligible for one of these scholarships, students must meet the following requirements:

2. Not be on any type of probation at the time of application or at the beginning of the program;
3. Have a GPA of at least 3.0;

How to Apply

Any student interested in applying for an ACA/IFSA-Butler scholarship should follow the procedure outlined below.

1. Go to the IFSA-Butler website (http://www.ifsa-butler.org) to find the appropriate application form for the program in which you would like to participate. Fill out required information, print, sign, and date. Be sure to keep a copy for yourself. Note: this application must be sent to the Appalachian College Association (see below), NOT to IFSA-Butler.

2. Acquire additional materials required for IFSA-Butler program application:
a. An official, up-to-date college transcript for all college and university work you have completed to date;

b. A program approval form, completed by your study abroad advisor (or, if your campus does not have a study abroad advisor, the academic dean or registrar);

c. A recommendation, written by a teacher or advisor in your major or in the academic discipline you intend to study overseas, describing your academic achievements, potential, and likelihood to succeed in a study abroad program (form is on IFSA-Butler website with other application materials). This recommendation should be in a sealed envelope, or the recommender can send it directly to the ACA (address is below);

d. Eight (8) passport-sized (2”x2”) photos, in black and white or color, with your name on the back of each photo.

3. Complete the ACA/IFSA-Butler Scholarship Application form, and write required essays (one statement of financial need and one statement of what you hope to gain from the study-abroad experience for which you are applying).

4. Return all materials (completed IFSA-Butler program application form; transcript; program approval form; recommendation; photographs; scholarship application form; essays) to:
