OVERVIEW

These HARMONIC DICTATION EXERCISES are intended to supplement materials which you already use in your eartraining classes, including (for example) software you use in your music computer laboratory. To use these HARMONIC DICTATION EXERCISES, you must have FINALE 2000 (or later) OR NOTEPAD, which is available as a FREE DOWNLOAD from Coda.

To download Coda's Notepad, click here.

It is assumed that you are familiar with these programs. It is also assumed that your browser (e.g., Explorer, Netscape, etc.) is configured to download FINALE files (see the Hints page).

This site is your source for the exercises. Download the exercises (as few or many as you want) to your desktop, hard drive, or other destination specified by you. To use the exercises, quit or hide your browser--do not try to do the exercises within your browser program.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Select the category of dictation exercises you want to work on (Triads, Diatonic Seventh Chords, etc.) by clicking on the appropriate link in the box to the left. On the subsequent page you will choose exercises by groups.
  2. To download the worksheet document, Alt/Option-click (this depends on your platform--Mac or PC--see the Hints page) the left link in each row in the table.
  3. To download the playback file, Alt/Option-click (as before, this depends on your platform--Mac or PC--see the Hints page) the right link in each row in the table. You must download BOTH the worksheet and its corresponding playback file!
  4. Quit or hide your browser program and navigate to the files you have downloaded.
  5. Double click on the worksheet file you have downloaded--doing so will launch Finale or Notepad.
  6. Using the playback controls, load the corresponding playback file for the worksheet.
  7. Play the progression. Each playback begins with a progression which establishes the key; after a short pause you will the exercise itself.
  8. Solutions showing all four voices, key and chords labels for these exercises are available ONLY through your instructor.
