My program for 2004-5 features a sampling of music from the first half of the 19th century:

Lecture: The Other End of the Keys

An interesting survey of piano construction, including:

  • brief history
  • types of pianos
  • piano construction
  • care and maintenance

Time: 50 minutes

A grand piano and at least one upright piano should be available.

Vita:

Dr. Wes Golightly is currently on the faculty of the Department of Music at Kentucky Christian College in Grayson, Kentucky. As a pianist, he has performed in recitals in Texas, California, Ohio, and Kentucky. His repertory ranges from Bach to Elliott Carter.

Dr. Golightly has made special studies concerning historic pianos, especially pianos from the early nineteenth century. While completing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The Ohio State University, he produced a document studying these instruments and the piano ideals of selected composers from 1800-1850.
