WAC Gains Visibiltiy at Summit

A Note of Thanks

The Writing across the Curriculum strand at the Second Annual ACA Technology Summit (October 21-23) drew abundant participation and afforded the project the greatest visibility since its inception in 1997.  Approximately 26 persons, including five administrators and two information technology directors, attended the pre-convention workshop on Thursday, October 21.  Thirteen of the 14 Culpeper schools participated in that opening workshop, including one non-Culpeper project school--Lindsey Wilson College.  The WAC strand  program, which ran concurrently with the Tech Summit activities, attracted anywhere from eight to 24 participants in each session.
WAC organizers provided numerous handouts for participants to take away, as well as a variety of books on interdisciplinary writing for perusal.  The T-shirts and buttons produced for the occasion provided even greater visibility for project activities.  About 50 T-shirts and 200 buttons were distributed to Tech Summit participants.
The featured WAC speaker,
Dr. Richard Selfe, from Michigan Technological University, received rave reviews from participants and at least one ACA college has plans to book him as a speaker in the future.  He facilitated the pre-convention WAC workshop, and led a WAC and Technology discussion as well as the MOO session on Friday.  Dr. Selfe also participated in several of the other sessions organized by the Culpeper WAC project.  In general, participants commented on his openness to their ideas, his ability to ask

The Culpeper WAC project thanks Amy Dukes, a representative from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund (with whom the Culpeper Foundation recently merged), for taking the time to attend activities.  The project owes a debt of gratitude to Katie Vande Brake (King), Tom Hess (Pikeville), and Tamara Kendig (WV Wesleyan) for organizing activities and creating handouts as well as the "WAC Attack" design for the T-shirts and buttons.  The project is also indebted to Ellen Millsaps (Carson-Newman) for displaying her books on the WAC table.  Thanks to the administrators who made a special effort to attend the pre-convention workshop--Dr. Alice Brown (ACA), Dr. Roger Keiffer (King), Dr. Mark Heinrich and Dr. Don Good (Carson-Newman), Dr. Richard Weeks (WV Wesleyan) and Dr. Karen Merriman (University of Charleston).  To Gordon Pierce (Alice Lloyd) and Tom McMurtry (Montreat), information technology directors who also attended the pre-convention workshop, your input  was greatly appreciated.
Further, the project thanks  ACA head office staff,
Bill Jaber (Lee University) and the student technology assistants. To presenters, session moderators, participants and those who staffed the WAC table--it couldn't have been done without you!   Finally, a special thanks to WAC strand guest speakers, Drs. Tony Krug (Carson-Newman), JP Lee (Berea), Richard Selfe, and Ilona Leki.
