WAC Cluster 1 Project

Three ACA schools—the University of Charleston, WV Wesleyan College and Pikeville College—applied for and received a grant from the Culpeper-funded WAC project for the 2000-2001 school year to develop their respective writing centers.  They listed the following project goals and objectives:

  • To help students and faculty to understand that good writing is essential to success in any  discipline.
  • To provide the most effective guidance and feedback—as currently suggested by leaders in  Writing Center research—to students in all disciplines who wish to take more responsibility for their writing.
  • To offer a welcoming and comfortable environment that will attract all student writers to come for help on a regular basis.
  • To provide a facility where students can work on their writing while still in the center, so that they may seek feedback or information at any time in their writing process.
  • To  make  available handbooks and readers,  reference  books,  and  software  that  will help students across the disciplines improve  their writing skills.
  • To  demonstrate and encourage the idea of writing as a process  by assisting  students  at  all stages of  writing  projects  and  in  all disciplines.
  • To recruit faculty from a variety of disciplines to form a core of support for WAC and the writing center.
At the culmination of the project, the schools provided a report of their successes and challenges.  Please feel free to contact any of the project leaders for more information or if you have questions: Jeannie Dalporto and Kathy Sohn.  See below for a link to the project report:
