Tutor.edu Online Tutoring Manual

Tutor.edu is an on-line tutor training manual consisting of fourteen modules that can be used separately by writing center directors or collectively by instructors as a semester course. The manual covers topics such as writing center publicity, ethics, documentation styles, and research strategies. The site contains exercises and additional resources for students and faculty.

In 1999, through an ACA initiative, five professors (Virginia Bower, Mars Hill College; Charlene Kiser, Milligan College; Kim McMurtry, Montreat  College; Ellen Millsaps, Carson-Newman College; and Katherine VandeBrake, King College) met and began discussing WAC initiatives, especially the role of Writing Centers. The need for a training manual for Writing Center tutors was identified, and the professors began working on an online tutor training manual.

The Project goals and objectives were as follows:

  1. To create fourteen tutor-training modules that could be used as a course or as guides for individual training sessions
  2. To encourage colleges which may not have a systematic plan for training tutors to adopt such a program
  3. To publish these materials online so that they would be accessible not only to ACA colleges but to others as well
  4. To provide self-contained units that could be adapted to meet the needs of individual schools
  5. To provide resources (handbooks, etc.) in the individual writing centers for tutor, student, and faculty use
The ACA funded the project, and the web site was completed in the spring of 2000. It can be viewed at http://www.montreat.edu/tutor/.
