Sati Maharaj

The 1997 ACA Culpeper-funded "Communicating in the 21st Century: Writing Across the Curriculum at Private Colleges of the Mountains" began with the belief that writing and technology are integral to all disciplines.  Sati Maharaj has directed the ACA Writing across the Curriculum program since its inception in 1997 with a grant from the Culpeper Foundation.  She continues to lead the program, which recently received a new $197,000 grant from the ACA-Mellon project for 2001-2003.  She also directs the writing program, the writing center and the writing across the curriculum program at the University of Charleston.  She was graduated from West Virginia University in 1994 with a doctorate in English Education.  Her dissertation work focused on the concept of writing to learn in engineering.  She worked in the English Department at Appalachian State University as co-director of the English Education program for three years before accepting the position as Project Director at the Appalachian College Association in 1997.
